Creating Digital Audio

For this assignment, I decided to make an audio of a story and background information for the story to widen student access to the content and provide another way to interact with the content.

Description of learning/instructional goal:

The instructional goal for this activity is a cognitive goal with affective under tones. Students will read a story that explores the meeting of two cultures and reflect over theme and purpose of the author. The affective nature of the goal involves personal reflection of how theme relates to student’s worldview.

Students will be able:

  • to discuss cultural themes in a short story and reflect over the role perspective plays in developing a worldview.

Single objective tied to goal:

Having read the background and short story Masi’s Little Girl, the student will be able to discuss and reflect over the differences in culture demonstrated to infer the author’s theme and intent.

Outline of content and Scripting

  • Audio of Background as well as PDF format of background.

  • Audio of story as well as PDF of story with annotations to elaborate over the meaning of difficult terms.

  • Discussion questions for follow-up or small group discussion activities.

Assignment Reflection

This is actually a resource that I wrote myself under my pseudonym Marlyn Mohs. I've always wanted to use this piece in a lesson or module to elicit discussion on culture, age, worldview, perspective, etc., with the purpose of broadening awareness of different cultures and encouraging self-reflection among my students. Having an audio of written text increases accessibility for my students. The written form is necessary for review and to locate evidence or expand on ideas and thought; but the audio allows the student to hear the story the first time unfettered by having to exercise reading skills. Having audio available mimics how we interact with stories a majority of the time - by listening. Our friends and family members tell us stories several times a day. When we are just listening, we employ a unique level of interest and attention that purely reading cannot engage. I prefer to have audio available throughout my lessons because I want to be sure my students can engage with the content in as many ways as possible.
